Hamburger helper
The season is upon us: time for lazy
afternoons, back-yard barbecues and
good old fashion salmonella. No,
wait, that doesn't sound right . . .
Fortunately, Chaney Instruments'
Acurite Sure Grip Digital Burger
Thermometer ($25;
www.chaneyinstrument.com; for
the BBQ) takes the guesswork out of
cookout cuisine but providing
accurate internal temperatures of
your blistering beef and poultry
patties. Powered by a single AA
battery, the digital probe comes
with a stop-plate so it only inserts
so far (no sense in shafting through
and sensing the temp of the grill).
It takes but a moment to read the
hotness of its victim, and then
displays its findings on an
easy-read LCD display. For the more
adventurous sunshine chefs, there's
also the Digital Instant Read
Fork/Thermometer (also $25), which
digs a little deeper for a
temperature reading because it's
also a big ol' fork. Ideal for those
roasts on the broil or pigs on a
spit. Remember, meat needs the heat
before it's safe to eat. I should
write jingles.
